How to read DMI's warnings

DMI has three warning levels and a risk notice. Each level has its own colour, and category 3 is the most serious. An early warning (forvarsel) can come up to five days ahead, while the warning itself is issued at most 36 hours ahead.

LevelColourWhat to do
Risk of severe weather (risk notice)BlueNot a warning yet. Keep an eye on the forecast.
Category 1 – Severe weather (voldsomt vejr)YellowBe aware: the weather may affect you. Take care outdoors.
Category 2 – Dangerous weather (farligt vejr)OrangeBe prepared: follow the authorities' advice and take extra care outdoors. The weather may disrupt traffic and supplies.
Category 3 – Very dangerous weather (meget farligt vejr)RedFollow the authorities' advice: there is a high risk that the weather will affect you. It may disrupt the normal functioning of society.

On this page the warnings come from MeteoAlarm, the shared European warning service, which uses yellow, orange and red. DMI's category 1 is shown as the yellow level. Risk notices and early warnings are on dmi.dk/varsler and in DMI's app. We haven't linked the warnings to municipalities yet; each warning's title names the area.

When does DMI issue a warning?

DMI warns according to fixed criteria agreed with the Danish Emergency Management Agency and the national police. A selection:

DMI also warns of freezing rain, snowstorms, drifting snow, dense fog (visibility under 100 metres), severe thunderstorms, heatwaves and cold spells. Since 1 September 2025 DMI has also warned of flooding from rivers and lakes; categories 1, 2 and 3 correspond to events that statistically occur once every 5, 20 and 50 years. Wind warnings can cover an area as small as a single municipality, and a cloudburst is local: most people in a warned area won't get one.

Advice when DMI issues a warning

Source and terms

The warnings are issued by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and fetched from MeteoAlarm (www.meteoalarm.org) every 2 minutes. We show them unchanged, with their time of issue, in Danish and English as DMI wrote them. If dmi.dk is down, you can also see the warnings for Denmark on MeteoAlarm's map of Denmark.

Advarselslisten is an independent compilation of open data and not a government service.
